Naming — Thodare

Thodare — [toh-DA-REE]. Three syllables, stress on the second. Lean into the Tamil rhythm; the final -e is a clear vowel, not silent.

Origin

The Tamil word தொடர் (thodar) means chain, sequence, continuity. A workflow IS a thodar — a connected, continuous chain of steps. The verb root is தொட (thoda) — to touch, to begin, to follow. Derivations include:

  • தொடர் (thodar) — n. chain / series / continuous sequence
  • தொடர்ச்சி (thodarchi) — continuity
  • தொடர்பு (thodarbu) — connection, link
  • தொடர் கதை (thodar kathai) — a serial / serialized story

In everyday Tamil, thodar is the word for a TV serial, a train (a “chain” of carriages), and a sequence of events. It is the most literal Tamil word for what a workflow is.

The Westernized form

Thodare adds a Latinate -e ending. The pattern reads as:

  • Italian -are infinitive — the form for to act, to do, to operate: operare, fondare, tonare. Thodare reads as if it were “to thodar” — to chain, to sequence. A verb of action.
  • Greek -os / -aros — heroic name endings: Theodoros, Pythagoras. Thodare doesn’t claim Theodore’s etymology (Θεόδωρος = theos + doron, “gift of god”), but it sits adjacent on the shelf.

What’s hidden, what’s surface

  • Surface read (Western eye): a clean Greco-Italian name. Sits naturally next to brands like Hono, Astro, Vercel.
  • Hidden read (Tamil eye): thodar — chain — sitting inside the wrapper. The semantic payload is exact: this product is a chain-of-steps engine.

Why it works for this product

A workflow engine’s central abstraction is a chain of operations — EditOp[] patches a chain, connections[] defines a chain, runs execute a chain. Compare:

  • Hono = flame (fast, light) — names the runtime feel.
  • Astro = star (cosmic, broad) — names the scope.
  • Thodare = chain (sequenced, continuous) — names the abstraction.

The film named Thodari

There’s a 2016 Tamil-language romance film called Thodari (one letter different, same Tamil root). It’s set entirely on a train — hence the name. Fun fact, no trademark conflict: films are Nice class 41 (entertainment), software is class 9/42, different markets. Settled territory.

What we considered + rejected

  • Sutram (சூத்திரம்) — thread / formula. Cleaner Latin read, but too obviously Sanskrit-Indian for the Western surface.
  • Nuelle — hides nool (நூல், thread). French-Western, direct kuralle-pattern parallel. Too close to “Noelle”.
  • Aram (அறம்) — virtue / dharma. Short, but over-claimed.
